Champion Your Chaplain

I'm fundraising for Stanthorpe State High School

Hey there!

I’m Hamish (also known as Chappy Ham), and I’m the Chaplain at Stanthorpe State High School. I’m super excited to be at the school, working alongside the brilliant student support team.

My role at the school is to provide social, emotional, and spiritual support to students, to be a listening ear and to bring a message of hope. I get to help students make good choices by providing them with some positive direction and a safe space to process what’s going on in their life.

Teenagers are facing challenges unlike any the world has ever seen. Social media and the digital landscape are new additions to the already difficult time of growth and change that is adolescence, and the symptoms of this struggle are showing in their relationships, lifestyle, health, and education.

This is why our teenagers need their community to stand up and support them.

I truly believe that each and every one of our incredible students have the ability to leave a positive impact on their world, and it’s my goal to encourage them and support them towards doing just that.

My Updates

Start of 2026 Update

Tuesday 24th Feb

Chaplaincy at Stanthorpe State High School is off to an awesome start, with SUA Prayer Retreat, the swimming carnival, Pancake Fridays, and plenty of opportunities to support young people as they travel through high school and navigate the complexities of being a teenager.

Prayer Retreat was a wonderful way to kick off 2026. I found that it was a great reminder of the “why” behind what we do as Chaplains. I got to hear messages around how we get to “be a light” in our schools. It was inspiring and encouraging to also hear the stories of how other Chaplains in my region have been able to support their schools in incredible ways. I enjoyed connecting with God in prayer for the year ahead, and also connecting with other Chaplains, new and old friends alike. Looking forward to Prayer Retreat 2027 and our in-service days.

To the great delight of many students at SSHS, Pancake Fridays have officially started for the new year! Usually running fortnightly, 4 times a term, the threefold purpose of Pancake Fridays is to:

-       Facilitate positive connection

-       Improve attendance on Fridays

-       Show care to students and give them a happy start to the day!

This is only possible thanks to amazing volunteers that choose to give up their Friday mornings for the awesome students of SSHS. Thanks Pancakes team!!

I’ve been given plenty of opportunities to support mostly our male students so far this term. These students are usually referred to our Student Support team by teachers, and then assigned for me to “case manage”, or simply check in with. I appreciate that as my experience and skills are developing, the Support team is trusting of me to now look after many of the male students that are needing support. I am encouraged to recognize improvement in my ability to effectively do this, as well as the processes, case notes, reporting correctly, etc.. As I approach 2 years of being a Chaplain, I recognise where I can still grow but am grateful for improvement.

I’m thankful to my CST and our community that supports us to do what we are privileged to do in our schools, and I’m excited for the rest of the year to come!
